Today is Korean American Day, a holiday celebrating the Korean American community and our contributions to this country. January 13th commemorates the arrival of the first Korean immigrants to the United States in 1903.
My story began in Seoul, South Korea, where I was born to a Korean mother and an African-American father. We moved to Tacoma when my father was stationed at Fort Lewis. Eventually, I would serve as Mayor of Tacoma and represent my hometown in the halls of Congress.

Through it all, my Korean-American heritage has always remained an important part of who I am.
It’s an honor to represent the South Sound in Congress, where I am one of just two Korean American Democrats.
Today reminds me of the importance of representation and ensuring everyone has a voice at the table. Will you join me and commit to fighting for a Congress that truly looks like America?
