Dear friend,

The United States Sentencing Commission met yesterday and proposed amendments to the federal Sentencing Guidelines. You can find the Commission's proposed amendments here: [link removed] [[link removed]]

Our focus has been on expanding compassionate release, so we were glad to see that the Commission is considering expanding the criteria for compassionate release and giving judges the same discretion as the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) has in determining when a sentence reduction is warranted. We know that the BOP cannot be trusted to be the sole gatekeeper for compassionate release. We are pleased to see that the Commission suggests positions that align with our advocacy.

In addition to compassionate release changes, the Commission proposed amendments to various guideline provisions that may be of interest to you and your loved ones. These include the drug safety valve, the career offender designation, the use of acquitted conduct at sentencing, firearm offenses, how to calculate criminal history for people with no countable criminal history, and much more.

I want to stress that all of these are proposed changes. We have a long way to go. The Commission has asked for the public to comment on the proposed amendments (comments will be accepted through March 14) and won't decide which to adopt until later this spring.

So, in the coming weeks, we will ask you to weigh in and share your story with the Commission to help support the sentencing guidelines amendments proposed by the Commission that we believe will promote a fairer sentencing system. Until then, you can join the fight by signing our petition and sharing it with your friends: [link removed] [[link removed]]

We will be back in touch very soon.

Yours,
