Notes from Mike's Desk from the Week of January 9 – 13, 2023

Hello, friends and Happy New Year! Welcome back to my newsletter highlighting what’s happening on Capitol Hill and in Louisiana’s 4th Congressional District. Thank you for subscribing and please consider recommending my newsletter to a friend.

IN THE HOUSE

In this 118th Congress, our Republican majority is committed to delivering to the American people a government that’s more accountable, an economy that’s strong, a nation that’s safe, and a future that’s built on freedom. Campaign season is over. Now it’s time to get to work.

This week, House Republicans instituted the most positive House reforms in a generation. Here are some highlights:

In addition to making our legislative process more transparent and open, House Republicans have held true to our campaign promises to strip funding from President Biden’s new 87,000 IRS agents, create a select committee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government to hold unelected bureaucrats accountable for their overreaches, and create a select committee on Strategic Competition with China.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK

This week, the House made one of our first priorities the passage my resolution (HCR 3) condemning the nationwide wave of violence, vandalism, and intimidation by pro-abortion activists in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court opinion overturning Roe v. Wade.

Following the leak and issuance of the Dobbs decision, radical anti-life advocates defaced, vandalized, and caused destruction to over 100 pro-life facilities, groups, and churches. Since then, there has been zero accountability for the ensuing violence. We are making the position of Congress crystal clear: violence, property damage, and threats must be condemned, and these clear violations of federal and state laws must be prosecuted.

My resolution was one of the first five actions taken by this Congress and 136 of my Republican colleagues joined me as cosponsors. I’m happy to announce that this commonsense legislation received at least some bipartisan support.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

While condemning the post-Dobbs attacks is a simple first step towards accountability, we have much more work left to do.

I joined Newsmax alongside my friend Rep. Claudia Tenney of New York to discuss my resolution and the next steps. Listen:

Among my other interviews this week, the debate I had with CNN's Jake Tapper probably got the most attention. We've known one another for over 20 years, and I always enjoy the banter with my old friend. We laughed about it off the air after the interview, and agreed we have to do it more often in the new year.

CASEWORK SUCCESS STORIES

Serving in Congress involves much more than what goes on in Washington, D.C. I have a large team of dedicated caseworkers dispersed throughout my district who are ready and equipped to meet the needs of Louisianians as they navigate the federal government, and I encourage all to explore the constituent services my offices have to offer. During my time in Congress, my office has returned so far over $8.4 million in individual benefits to constituents, completed over 8,000 case files, and sent over 81,000 letter responses to constituents.

As we begin this new Congress, we'll use this space in our upcoming Liberty Letters to highlight some of the constituent casework wins my team has secured. Stay tuned for updates.

And as always, if you need help navigating a federal agency, please don't hesitate to reach out to my team here, or by giving us a call at 318-840-0309.

LAGNIAPPE

Last week, my staff was on hand in Webster Parish to present Minden Fire Chief Kip Mourad with a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol, in celebration of his 50 years of dedication to the people of North Louisiana.

As the son of a firefighter who was critically injured in the line of duty, I know firsthand the sacrifice that firefighters make to protect our communities, and I’m grateful for Chief Mourad’s efforts in doing so. Congrats on your retirement, Chief, and thank you for your years of service!
