Team,
If there’s one thing we’ve seen over the past year, it’s that majorities matter.
The first day of the new Michigan legislature was earlier this week. It was the first time we’ve seen a Democratic majority in both the Michigan House AND Senate in over 40 years. As such, they didn’t waste time getting the ball rolling on legislation they’ve been trying to get across the line for decades.
They’ve already announced legislation aimed at restoring the rights of workers, expanding the earned income tax credit, protecting LGBTQ Michiganders, and repealing the retirement tax that impacts many of Michigan’s seniors. I’m also hearing there will be a renewed push for the gun storage bill Senator Rosemary Bayer introduced last term. That bill is the state companion to my Safe Guns Safe Kids bill, which we introduced following the shooting at Oxford High School in 2021.
Also notable is that, after the success of our pro-choice ballot initiative in November, the legislature is moving on formal legislation to repeal the 1931 law still on Michigan’s books that criminalizes abortion in almost all circumstances.
It’s a stark contrast to the agenda of the new Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, where earlier this week, we voted on anti-choice legislation. Because of the Republicans’ new majority, it passed by a small number of votes. But thankfully, Democrats still hold the majority in the Senate – and this type of extreme legislation will not become law.
Bottom line: majorities matter. It’s why holding on to competitive seats is so important. I’m thrilled that Michigan has a real chance to make meaningful change at the state level, and I’ll be doing all I can to try to get things done in the House.
If you’d like to help me continue to push for legislation that matters, chip in below. [[link removed]]
