THE WEEK'S BIG 3

A new ADL Center on Antisemitism Research survey of U.S. adults found widespread belief in antisemitic conspiracy theories and tropes (20 percent) — nearly double the antisemitic prejudice found in 2019 — as well as substantially negative anti-Israel sentiment among Americans. Organizers of the New Orleans Mardi Gras backpedaled on their decision to host actor and director Mel Gibson as a celebrity guest at the parade after opposition, including from ADL and other Jewish groups, to Gibson’s history of antisemitic and racist comments. Opening arguments are underway in the seditious conspiracy trial for members of the Proud Boys, a far-right extremist group.

Read on for more on these headlines, news you can use to fight hate and the latest info about ADL from around the country.

Survey Finds ‘Classical Fascist’ Antisemitic Views Widespread in U.S.

“At points in the past half-century, many U.S. antisemitism experts thought this country could be aging out of it, that hostility and prejudice against Jews were fading in part because younger Americans held more accepting views than did older ones. But a survey released Thursday shows how widely held such beliefs are in the United States today, including among younger Americans. The research by the Anti-Defamation League includes rare detail about the particular nature of antisemitism, how it centers on tropes of Jews as clannish, conspiratorial and holders of power.” The Washington Post:

Mel Gibson Removed from Mardi Gras Parade After Jewish Community Speaks Out

“It took less than a day for Endymion to change their mind about Mel Gibson's initiation to be co-Grand Marshal for the parade. The actor was swiftly removed from the lineup after backlash and the Krewe says it received threats. The glittering display of one of New Orleans’ largest superkrewes will no longer feature Mel Gibson. Gibson has a long history of anti-Semitic, racist, and sexist rants and comments. Almost immediately after announcing he’d be co-grand marshal – Endymion faced a tsunami of negative feedback. Shortly after, they rescinded their offer.” CBS New Orleans:

Mel Gibson has an established track record of antisemitic, racist and misogynistic remarks, and his apologies fall flat. I'm relieved he is no longer riding, but he never should have been invited to begin with. I hope Endymion leadership reflects on the pain this caused.

Proud Boys Sedition Trial Moves Forward with Opening Arguments
“Federal prosecutors and defense attorneys delivered opening statements Thursday in the seditious conspiracy trial of former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio and four other members of the far-right extremist group involved in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. All five defendants — Tarrio, Ethan Nordean, Joseph Biggs, Zachary Rehl and Dominic Pezzola — are charged with conspiring to oppose the lawful transfer of presidential power by force, assaulting and impeding law enforcement officers, obstructing a governmental proceeding, destroying government property, and preventing, hindering or delaying by force the execution of governing the transfer of power.”
