In New York, we joined Rise and Resist and Indivisible Nation BK for a rally outside the New York Public Library. “The insurrectionist disqualification clause says that anyone who has taken oath of office and then engages in insurrection against the U.S. government is then prohibited from ever holding public office again,” Alexandra Flores-Quilty said at the rally. “Today we are gathering… to call attention to what happened two years ago and to demand accountability.” The New York rally coincided with New York State Senator Brad Hoylman’s introduction of the RIOT Act, which would bar insurrectionists from holding public office in the state and implement the rules put forth in Section 3. “Up to 47 New Yorkers were arrested and charged with their roles in the January 6 U.S. Capitol riots that left five people dead in the immediate aftermath and dozens of police officers injured,” Senator Hoylman said. “Our RIOT Act will bar anyone who’s acted against the sanctity of our democracy from holding elected office and sends a strong message that violence is incompatible with government service. We must continue to safeguard our democracy from the extremists attempting to destroy it.” In Northampton, Massachusetts, we were among 100 demonstrators rallying for accountability. As John Bonifaz told the crowd, “Those forces behind this fascist threat [to our democracy] are in positions of power in many of our state legislatures and in Congress today. They will engage in voter suppression, intimidation, and gerrymandering. They will engage in political violence and an insurrection to attack our democracy. We must stop them.” The fight to uphold the Constitution and protect our democracy in the wake of the January 6th insurrection is far from over. We need all the support we can muster to make clear to Secretaries of State and election officials nationwide that Trump and his insurrectionist allies are constitutionally ineligible to hold public office.
