Representatives Espaillat, Cherfilus-McCormick Reintroduce Resolution Urging Reproductive Justice as a Fundamental Freedom
WASHINGTON, DC – This week, Representatives Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) and Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (FL-20) reintroduced their resolution condemning attacks from extreme Republicans on reproductive rights and to reaffirm their commitment to advancing reproductive justice and judicial reform.
"During our first week in Congress, we have witnessed extreme MAGA Republicans launch new attacks on women’s reproductive freedom, part of House Republicans’ commitment to criminalizing abortion nationwide with no exceptions," said Rep. Espaillat.
"Many Americans are already suffering under the horrifying consequences of Republicans’ agenda: women denied lifesaving care, health care providers under attack, and new laws that punish women and those who help them. While House Republicans try to criminalize abortion, we join our Democratic colleagues to fight for reproductive freedom and are reintroducing our resolution today to reaffirm that access to abortion constitutes access to health care and is a fundamental liberty," he continued.
"Last Congress, my Democratic colleagues and I firmly demonstrated to the American people that we value women's right to choose. By mostly party-line votes, House Democrats passed consequential legislation such as the Women's Health Protection Act and the Ensuring Access to Abortion Act. These pieces of legislation aimed to protect access to abortion at the federal level in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court's unprecedented decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Unfortunately, at the start of the 118th Congress, House Republicans are doubling down on their commitment to criminalize abortion by launching new attacks on women's reproductive freedom. Instead of building upon the progress made by House Democrats during the 117th Congress, extreme MAGA Republicans have put forth an agenda with the intent to impose their will on the people—especially women," said Rep. Cherfilus-McCormick.
"Abortion bans are misogynistic and discriminatory. Such bans disproportionately impact those already experiencing barriers to health care—younger, disadvantaged, and African American women, as these groups are more likely to seek an abortion. If my Republican colleagues truly cared about women and their reproductive health, they would focus more on ensuring women had better access to care rather than criminalizing women and their doctors. I proudly support this resolution because today and every day, House Democrats stand in solidarity with women," she concluded.

The Espaillat-Cherfilus-McCormick resolution:
1. Condemns the restless and newly constituted Supreme Court’s holding in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization;
2. Commits to utilizing constitutional authorities provided to Congress under Article III of the Constitution to enact judicial reform, helping reassure public confidence in the Supreme Court so that it is not viewed as a partisan institution.
3. Commits to ensuring that Federal law advances reproductive justice, recognizing that access to abortion constitutes access to health care as a fundamental liberty of all human beings.
4. Commits to protecting communities that will be disproportionately impacted by the holding in Dobbs, including women of color, undocumented women, women living in poverty, LGBTQIA+ individuals, gender nonconforming individuals, and individuals with disabilities.
5. Urges the Executive Branch to utilize constitutional authorities and a whole-of-government approach to advance reproductive justice.

Congresistas Espaillat y Cherfilus-McCormick reintroducen resolución instando a que se reconozca la Justicia Reproductiva como Libertad Fundamental
WASHINGTON, DC – Esta semana, los congresistas Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) y Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (FL-20) reintrodujeron su resolución condenando los ataques de los republicanos extremos contra los derechos reproductivos y reafirmando su compromiso de promover la justicia reproductiva y la reforma judicial.
“Durante nuestra primera semana en el Congreso, hemos sido testigos de que republicanos extremos de MAGA lanzan nuevos ataques contra la libertad reproductiva de las mujeres, como parte del compromiso de los republicanos de la Cámara de criminalizar el aborto en todo el país sin excepciones”, dijo el Rep. Espaillat.
"Muchos estadounidenses ya están sufriendo las horribles consecuencias de la agenda de los republicanos: a las mujeres se les niega atención médica vital, se ataca a los proveedores de atención médica y se promulgan nuevas leyes que castigan a las mujeres y a quienes las ayudan. "En el pasado Congreso, mis colegas demócratas y yo demostramos con firmeza al pueblo estadounidense que valoramos el derecho de las mujeres a elegir. En su mayoría por los votos de nuestro partido, los demócratas de la Cámara aprobaron leyes fundamentales como la Ley de Protección de la Salud de la Mujer y la Ley de Garantía del Acceso al Aborto. Estas leyes tenían como objetivo proteger el acceso al aborto a nivel federal a raíz de la decisión sin precedentes de la Corte Suprema de EE. UU. de anular Roe v. Wade. Desafortunadamente, al comienzo del Congreso 118º, los republicanos de la Cámara están redoblando su compromiso de criminalizar el aborto lanzando nuevos ataques a la libertad reproductiva de las mujeres. En lugar de aprovechar el progreso logrado por los demócratas de la Cámara durante el Congreso 117º, los republicanos extremos de MAGA han presentado una agenda con la intención de imponer su voluntad sobre las personas ―especialmente las mujeres", dijo la Rep. Cherfilus-McCormick.
"Las prohibiciones del aborto son misóginas y discriminatorias. Dichas prohibiciones afectan desproporcionadamente a quienes ya experimentan barreras para acceder a la atención médica: mujeres más jóvenes, desfavorecidas y afroamericanas, ya que estos grupos tienen más probabilidades de buscar un aborto. Si mis colegas republicanos realmente se preocuparan por las mujeres y su salud reproductiva, se enfocarían más en garantizar que las mujeres tuvieran un mejor acceso a la atención médica en lugar de criminalizar a las mujeres y sus médicos. La resolución de Espaillat-Cherfilus-McCormick:
1. Condena la inquietante y recién constituida decisión de la Corte Suprema en el caso Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization;
2. Se compromete a utilizar las autoridades constitucionales con que cuenta el Congreso en virtud del Artículo III de la Constitución para promulgar la reforma judicial, ayudando a reafirmar la confianza pública en la Corte Suprema para que no sea vista como una institución partidista.

5. Insta al Poder Ejecutivo a utilizar las autoridades constitucionales y un enfoque del gobierno en su conjunto para avanzar en la justicia reproductiva.
