Weekly Update

Hello Neighbor,

It feels so great to be finishing my second week at the state capitol. I am so honored to be here and serving all of you as a conservative voice in the people?s house. My committee assignments include both Education Finance and Education Policy where we?ve already been at work hearing important legislation for our students.

This week started out strong on the policy front. On Monday we passed Tax conformity legislation off the house floor that will mean relief as well as simplicity for Minnesotans as they prepare for tax season. After more than a year?s worth of changes to the tax code at the federal level this bill brings our state tax code in line so that when taxpayers are filing there won?t be mismatches in credits or deductions. This also means some tax relief as we match cuts that have been passed in the U.S. House and Senate.

We?ve had two major bills in the education committees this week. The first is House File 5 which offers free universal lunches for all students. I offered the first amendment on the bill which would have expanded the current free and reduced lunch program to 250% of the poverty guidelines and increase from its current 185%. It was ultimately defeated along partisan lines in favor of keeping the democrat?s blanket language. This along with the added mandates requiring school lunches to meet strict government guidelines is why my Republican colleges and I voted against the bill. Local control is so important for giving parents the most influence in how their children are educated at school.

The next bill up was HF 44, this bill requires schools to place menstrual products in all bathrooms. Again on this bill we offered a reasonable amendment that would limit this to only women?s bathrooms and of course the democrats voted down our amendment on partisan lines. Here the state government is going to supersede local school boards again and add costs for a mandate that is completely unnecessary. Current statute already allows schools to provide the products and support our young women, the state government does not need to intervene and add complexity.
