From January 13th to the 14th, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross led a Presidential delegation to attend Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammatteis inauguration and congratulate the Guatemalan people on a successful democratic transition of power. The delegation underscored the United States commitment to development and prosperity across the country and intends to sign a Memorandum of Understanding to catalyze up to $1 billion in private sector investment in Guatemala over the next three years.

US Trade Deficit Falls 8.2% to $43.1B in November [ [link removed] ]

The U.S. trade deficit fell in November to the lowest level in more than three years as U.S. exports rose while imports declined, putting the country on track to see the first annual decline in the trade deficit in six years.

The Commerce Department said Tuesday that the gap between what America sells and what it buys abroad narrowed by 8.2% in November to $43.1 billion, the smallest deficit since October 2016.

Census Bureau Releases New Content on 2020Census.Gov in 59 Languages [ [link removed] ]
The U.S. Census Bureau recently launched an update to 2020census.gov that includes content in 59 languages, including language assistance guides and videos that explain how to complete the 2020 Census questionnaire online, by phone or by mail when it becomes available in mid-March. People can respond to the census online and by phone in 13 languages. The expansive site includes in-depth information in both English and Spanish.

NIST to Revamp iEdison Tool for Reporting Federally Funded Inventions [ [link removed] ]

As part of its efforts to improve the transfer of federally funded technologies from lab to market, the U.S. Department of Commerces National Institute of Standards and Technology is seeking public feedback on the Interagency Edison System an online platform where organizations that have received federal funding report their inventions. NIST plans to modernize and streamline the system to improve user experience, enhance functionality and increase security to ensure sensitive business information is protected.

New Census Bureau Tool Illustrates Job-to-Job Flows [ [link removed] ]

The rise in construction jobs in recent years has meant increased hiring from other employers and more hiring of those not currently employed.

But where is all this hiring activity happening? Construction hiring is especially strong in the Southwest, extending through Nevada, Idaho and Colorado. There is also evidence of robust hiring in northern Appalachia, including Kentucky, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

The research article published recently in the Bureau of Economic Analysis Survey of Current Business focuses on firms that are engaged in the trade of selected services, a subset of international services trade statistics. U.S. Economic Development Administration and Indiana University Launch New USA Opportunity Zones Tool [ [link removed] ]

The U.S. Department of Commerces Economic Development Administration, Indiana University and its Kelley School of Business announced the launch of the USA Opportunity Zones tool.

This new web-based tool will help more than 390 EDA-designated Economic Development Districts across the nation, as well as local economic and community developers and investors, target private investment to economically-distressed areas where private investment may be eligible for capital gain tax incentives under the bipartisan Opportunity Zones initiative.
