Last month, Senator Krysten Sinema announced she was switching parties to become an Independent, which made the Democrats' slim majority even smaller.

Here’s how this relates to climate: With a Democratic majority, we hope Congress acts to protect the environment. But in reality, we’ve seen Sinema and Manchin use that slim majority to do the fossil fuel industry's bidding by using their vote as a condition to pass a bill.

We can’t count on the federal government to act on climate, especially as we see the disarray of Republicans in the House and the Democrats in the Senate working with the fossil fuel industry. This is why we must turn to our communities to pass climate legislation at the city and state levels.

Lead Locally is leading the charge to pass meaningful climate solutions at the local level. John, will you join us by adding your name to our movement? We can’t count on DC politicians to do what’s suitable for our communities, so we’re working every year to elect climate leaders to city councils and state legislatures to hold our governments accountable for protecting our neighborhoods.

As we start the new year, we’re seeing arctic freezes, disastrous blizzards, and historic rainfall and floods across the country. And we’re only a week into the new year! We need elected leaders who stand up to demand clean air regulations, caps on drilling, a rapid transition to renewables, and so much more.

We are working alongside organizers across the country to fight back — and building the grassroots power we need to elect climate champions to city councils and state legislatures. We’ll need more folks to join us as we prepare to fight for the climate in the years ahead.
