Forward Society membership, hope for civil society, new school and scholarship tool Viewpoint A state without convictions Wisconsin’s labor crisis among prosecutors is about to come to a head in Dodge County By Patrick McIlheran Know what puts a crimp in any effort to fight crime? Not being able to do anything with suspects once the cops catch them. In Dodge County, District Attorney Kurt Klomberg is quitting — and is pretty close to being the last guy out the door. As first reported in the online news outlet Wisconsin Right Now, the county is about to be left with no prosecutors. None. In the past six months, half of Klomberg’s assistant prosecutors announced they’re retiring. Another took family leave through February. The remaining assistant district attorney took a prosecutor job in another county with a shorter commute, and Dodge County can’t get any prosecutors to take a job offer. It cannot even get applicants. Read the entire piece Forward Society Wisconsin’s state motto is the simple and powerfully positive word FORWARD. Unfortunately, the fundamental pillars of civil society have been eroding for quite some time. Eloise Anderson, one of the most thoughtful and experienced researchers on issues of civil society and the family, has witnessed this erosion firsthand. Having worked extensively in government while acknowledging the great value that happens outside it, Anderson offers direction for a new civil society — a reinvigorated space of community, care and hope. Listen in Fact Sheets Early Childcare Fact Sheet The Badger Institute has a growing library of one-pagers highlighting facts, data, trends and recommendations on a variety of policy issues. The landscape of childcare in Wisconsin faces a problem: Evidence suggests that an overemphasis on quality regulation likely has driven some providers out of the market, resulting in fewer low-income children served by Wisconsin Shares, the state’s subsidized childcare program, and less overall parental choice and higher costs, without measurable improvements in outcomes. Instead of more regulation and higher costs, the answer is to reduce government regulations and place more authority into the hands of parents and childcare providers. Using a school matching quiz, Schoolahoop allows parents to enter their priorities — including class size, test scores, cost, commute times and more — and shows them the local school options that best fit their needs Schoolahoop also offers Scholarship Discovery, a tool that allows eligible families to identify scholarship programs that can help finance private education options for their children. Eligible families can receive over $13,000 toward private education through one of four scholarship programs.
