JUST RELEASED: 2023 Emergency Watchlist highlights the countries at greatest risk of increased humanitarian emergency.
International Rescue Committee | Somalia
John,

I wanted to be one of the first to let you know — the IRC just released the 2023 Emergency Watchlist, our annual assessment of the 20 countries at greatest risk of a new humanitarian emergency in the new year.

For the past decade, the Watchlist has helped the IRC determine where to focus our emergency preparedness efforts and has successfully predicted, on average, 85–95% of the countries that will face the worst crises.

Can you guess which countries appear in the top 10 on this year's Emergency Watchlist? The list and ranking might surprise you...

John, unprecedented levels of need are concentrated in Watchlist countries. These 20 countries are home to just 13% of the global population, yet they represent 90% of people in humanitarian need.

If we can harness a deep focus and investment to understand what is happening in these countries — and what to do about it — then we may, finally, have a chance to start reducing the scale of human suffering in the world. And, together with compassionate humanitarians like you, we can make a meaningful difference in these places.

Supporters like you make our emergency response in these and other countries possible, John. We are so grateful to have you by our side as we begin this new year.
