Over the last few weeks, Peruvians have been living through an unprecedented political and social conflict that has already resulted in more than 40 deaths.

The violence unleashed by the government of Dina Boluarte is taking place in regions with large Indigenous Quechua and Aymara populations in the south of the country. We see an obvious element of racism in this government violence, which identifies the mobilized population, mostly Indigenous, as enemies.

The U.S. has played a disappointing role in the month since protests started. It has not adequately condemned the brutal repression and the excessive use of force by the Peruvian government. Instead, the U.S. ambassador praised the Peruvian government on Twitter, posting a photo shaking hands with Peru’s new prime minister.

International solidarity is urgently needed to demand that the Peruvian government respect the lives and human rights of its inhabitants.
