Dear John,
Republicans have spent years promising to “drain the swamp.” So
what’s the first thing they did after taking control of the House of
Representatives?
They gutted the Office of Congressional Ethics.
You can’t make this up, friends. The Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) is the *only* independent,
nonpartisan investigative body in Congress with the authority to
investigate House members and staff suspected of wrongdoing. Without a
strong OCE, members of Congress simply will not be held accountable for
ethics violations.
But here's the problem: the corporate media is notorious for saying “both sides” are equally
to blame for ethics problems in Congress, even though it's crystal
clear which party opposes strong ethics rules: the Republicans.
We cannot allow this to be a one-day "both sides" story that gets lost in the 24-hour news cycle. We need to call out Republicans right now — and demand they immediately restore the Office of Congressional Ethics to full strength.
Will you make a donation to Inequality Media and help hold House Republicans accountable for gutting the Office of Congressional Ethics?
Good government watchdogs warn that under the
rules changes, the Office of Congressional Ethics will “struggle to
perform its core function.”
But you know who loves these new changes? George Santos, the newly
elected Republican from Long Island who has been caught in a series of
campaign finance scandals after lying to voters about virtually his
entire resume and life story. "I think it's fantastic," Santos said.
It’s no secret why the GOP is gutting the Office of Congressional
Ethics. This is just the start of what will be an unashamedly
pro-corruption, anti-democracy House majority.
Just last year, the OCE exposed several Republicans for violations of
the STOCK Act, the law that bans members of Congress from making stock
trades based on confidential information. Republicans want to make sure that never happens again.
Inequality Media is using our vast reach on social media to bypass the corporate media and communicate directly with the public and call out right-wing corruption. Will you make a donation to help us continue to hold politicians, including Republicans, accountable?
The need for media that holds representatives accountable for blatant acts of corruption has never been more dire.
Thanks for your support, as always,
Robert Reich
