I cast my first votes, signed my oath of office, and gave a speech on the House floor.

Hi John,

It’s been an exciting and eventful first week in Congress to stay the least.

  • I was sworn in and signed my oath. After being sworn in on the House floor, I also signed my official congressional oath of office, pledging to defend the constitution and be a faithful servant of the people during my time in Congress.
  • I nominated a new Democratic Leader – Rep. Hakeem Jeffries. While it took Republicans 15 votes to come together to nominate a House Speaker, I stood united with my Democratic colleagues to unanimously nominate our party’s leader.
  • I cast my first vote. I voted NO on the new Republican rules package – a set of standards that govern how Congress runs. Their final package gutted the office of Congressional Ethics. I don’t see how members of any party support this. Members of Congress should be held to the highest ethical standards. Despite its passage, I will continue to push for accountability and transparency.
  • I gave my first speech on the House floor. Following the overturning of Roe v. Wade, partisan extremists have ratcheted up their attacks on abortion rights nationwide. There is no issue more pressing than protecting our reproductive liberty. I made it known that I will be leading the fight to defend the bodily autonomy of all Americans.

Despite a chaotic start to the new Republican-controlled Congress (in which we went nearly a full week without a House of Representatives), I’m committed to making sure we pass progressive, bold, and meaningful legislation that addresses the priorities of Vermonters in the 118th Congress.
