John,
Local climate activism is in Sunrise’s DNA.
Since our founding we’ve known that young people getting involved in their community to fight the climate crisis is the KEY to making a difference and winning the climate policies we need. Our movement has always embraced the idea that pushing for a Green New Deal has to happen at both the federal and local levels.
Over the past few years, our movement has played a huge role in changing national climate politics and securing major investments through the IRA. Now, we need to double down on local organizing to make sure our wins don't stop there and continue to fight for a Green New Deal from the bottom up!
Sunrise has been engaged in local organizing since 2017 and our work has already led to tangible climate action and investments in places like Texas, Oregon, and Pennsylvania.
And now folks are catching on to the power of local organizing and local climate activism. 😉 Just check out this recent headline from Fast Company:
It’s great that outlets like Fast Company are highlighting just how important local action is — because it can so often get overlooked.
We know this fight can be tough and seemingly never ending. That’s why we’re sharing the key points from this Fast Company article with you today.
We hope it can reinvigorate you, uplift you, and strengthen your belief that the work we’re doing is important and makes a difference:
The policy changes that can affect climate change are local rather than national! That means things like fossil fuel plants, renewable energy sources, are under state control and cities can implement policies about natural gas vs. electric appliances.
Local wins can become contagious! Acting locally and thinking nationally is a guiding principle of our work. The reason we have hubs and chapters across the country is because local wins can act as a catalyst to spurring national policy changes.
Local action can trigger national policy, spread to other countries and ultimately trigger global agreements! This is what we’re fighting for with a Green New Deal in communities. Local wins can and DO turn into national policy which can then turn into global policy.
Every city, every town, every community matters in this fight. And we’re going to continue to organize everyday people across this country to create an unstoppable wave of public support for the Green New Deal that our government can’t ignore.
Thank you for being a part of this movement and for standing with us.
In solidarity,
Nowshin
