I never saw myself as an activist, until my son Jordan was shot and killed over a decade ago in November 2012. At that moment, everything changed. As a grieving mother, I decided I had to turn my pain into purpose. I decided to dedicate my life to ensuring that no parent has to feel the pain that I felt that day – and that I still feel to this day.

In the years after my son’s death, I began working as an organizer and an activist for gun safety organizations. I felt like our work was making a real difference in states around the country, but after the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, I knew that I needed to do more.

I decided to run for Congress in a district deemed impossible for Democrats to win, against a Republican incumbent with millions in dark money from corporate PACs and special interests. No one thought we could pull the upset, but I knew our community better.

Since our win in 2018, the Democratic Party of Georgia has expanded and counted win after win against the ever more extreme GOP. We flipped the state blue for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in 2020 – defeating Donald Trump. We flipped the Senate blue, electing Senators Jon Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock. And then we elected Rev. Warnock AGAIN last month. But the past is not why I’m emailing you. I want you to understand the situation in Georgia – that we have activists and passionate civic leaders ready to follow the call to defeat the GOP. But I’m emailing you to support our future and to ask you to split a donation between my campaign and the Democratic Party of Georgia to continue our hard work.

The Democratic Party of Georgia has critical races coming up – not just in 2024, but in 2026 when we MUST re-elect Jon Ossoff, and even this fall with municipal elections across the state that will impact communities and millions of Georgians.

We need to ensure that our state party represents not just metro Atlanta but the entire state, from Savannah and Columbus to Valdosta and Augusta, from Albany and Macon to Rome and Statesboro, and small towns ALL across the state.
