President's Message

As life begins to return to normal after COVID-19, NASN continues its advocacy efforts on behalf of children.

Here are some of our legislative priorities for 2023:

NASN urges Congress to pass the Nurses for Under-Resourced Schools Everywhere Act (NURSE) Act, which would recognize the critical role of school nurses in providing students access to quality health care so that they are healthy, safe, and ready to learn.

NASN urges Congress to pass the One School, One Nurse Act that would work to enable every public school to have a full-time registered nurse on staff so that children are safe, healthy, and ready to learn.

NASN urges Congress to pass the Grow SISPs ACT (Growing, Recruiting, and Obtaining Workers in Specialized Instructional Support Personnel Services) that will create a grant program at the Department of Education to increase partnerships between school districts and colleges to train and certify various Specialized Instruction Support Personnel programs (SISPs) to better serve rural and lower-income school districts.

Support LGBTQ Youth in Schools

School nurses are uniquely positioned to support LGBTQ students, and one approach is involvement in Gender and Sexuality Alliances (GSAs). The Journal of School Nursing (JOSN) article, Supporting and Establishing GSAs in Chicago Public Schools, shows that support for GSAs is important to aiding LGBTQ students and suggests ways in which school nurses can harness their expertise to be involved with GSAs.

Managing Chronic Health Conditions

Using the WSCC Model to Implement Wellness Policies and Sustain Chronic Health Condition Management in Schools

School nurse involvement with school wellness policies is critical to ensure the overall health and well-being of students are addressed. The ‘gold standard’ model school wellness policy developed by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation was updated in June 2020. This course offers information on the updated model wellness policy that includes recommended language to address all 10 components of the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) Model and the (2020) NASN supplemental language to address chronic health condition management – positioning the school nurse to be able to fully participate when schools review and refresh current school wellness policies.  Learn more and complete the course.
