STORY STILL DEVELOPING ... Last Thursday, in what is set to be one of the most damaging and far-reaching environmental decisions of this presidency, the Trump administration officially proposed to gut the National Environmental Policy Act.
NEPA is one of the most important tools the environmental movement has to highlight the damage that heavily polluting projects would cause and demonstrate the public's opposition to them. Under the new rule, agencies will no longer need to consider climate change when approving highways, pipelines, and other infrastructure proposals.
Now, policy insiders are saying this will apply to offshore drilling projects as well. Coastal states are bracing for a new wave of organizing to prevent these projects from getting the green light.
We need your help. We just kicked off our January Membership Drive. It's the most important month of the year for LCV — it's when we bring in the bulk of the funding for campaigns like this all year long.
The best thing you can do to help right now is renew your membership for 2020. And it only costs $5.
Please, renew your membership with the League of Conservation Voters today for $5 or more »
Since the announcement, LCV members from all over the country have pitched in with $5, $10, $20 donations — some donating for the very first time, and many making monthly contributions to help fight back.
That's huge — because a major donor has put up a $500,000 fund for environmental campaigns like this one — IF 10,000 LCV members pitch in first.
We're turning to you today for help. In reaching that goal, small donations count the same as big ones. Renewing your membership for just $5 could make the difference between funding some major environmental campaigns this year, or totally scaling back.
AND, if you make a donation of $35 or more, you'll get your choice of one of these awesome t-shirts to show your environmental pride:
Here's where things stand:
2020 JANUARY MEMBERSHIP DRIVE
- GOAL: 10,000 donations
- PROGRESS: 37% to goal
A donor will give $500,000 if we meet our goal.
Can you confirm your membership status?
FOR IMMEDIATE REVIEW:
Please confirm your membership.
This attack is also deeply inequitable: The communities most likely to be near environmentally hazardous federal projects and exposed to air and water pollution are communities of color and Indigenous communities.
Gutting NEPA would silence frontline voices and further entrench environmental racism.
I hope to hear from you today — because we need to move quickly. There is a 60-day window for public comment that the Trump administration is supposed to weigh before their proposed change to NEPA can take effect. We're mobilizing to flood House and Senate offices with letters. We're organizing environmental activists in key states. We're going to overwhelm federal agencies with public comments.
How fast we can move — and how big we can go — depends on you, friend.
Don't sit this one out. Renew your LCV membership for just $5 today »
We wouldn't be able to do this work without your help, friend. Thank you for your generosity, and everything that you do for the environment.
