This month marks 13 years since Citizens United v. FEC opened the floodgates for dark money to pour into our elections. Since then, billions in outside money has been spent.
I got the nickname the “Hunted Democrat” back in 2012 when special-interest groups spent $40 million in an attempt to buy Ohio’s Senate seat. That was over a decade ago and a lot by 2012 standards.
And our elections have only become more expensive since then. Last year’s Ohio Senate race was one of the five most expensive in the country with over $200 million spent and even more is expected to be spent on our race.
We need to show our opponents that there’s a groundswell of support for getting dark money’s corruptive influence out of our politics, so for its anniversary, we’re working to gather 13,000 signatures in support of ending Citizens United . Will you add your name to mine? [[link removed]]
Special-interest groups are playing the long game.
When corporations and billionaires contribute big sums to campaigns, we all lose -- because those candidates will do special interests’ bidding instead of looking out for the people they serve.
Special-interest groups should not have a louder voice in our elections than working Ohioans. That’s why I introduced a measure that would overturn Citizens United , and I’m counting on your support for my efforts.
