Impeachment Vote is Imminent. The vote for the House to send impeachment articles to the Senate is reportedly happening today! While we’re excited for progress, we have always maintained that the articles passed by the House are too narrow. Well - we’ve got good news - the House can expand those articles even after passing them to the Senate. So it’s not too late to call your Representatives and ask them to expand the articles of impeachment, especially in light of the new trove of information revealed last night.
Our MoC’s MUST stop war in Iran. All eyes will be on impeachment - but don’t forget about what happened last week. Our deranged administration almost started a war with Iran, and the escalation ended with over a hundred people killed in an accidentally downed plane. At ISF, we believe that part of the blame lies with our MoC’s failure to restrict the war powers of the executive branch, as we have asked them to do many times over the past three years.
We’ve been disappointed before when our MoC’s failed to repeal the AUMF which allows the president to wage war in the Middle East with barely any justification and no authorization from Congress. But things have gotten worse - just before the Iran crisis, Congress passed a deeply flawed NDAA (National Defense Authorization Act). This included large increases in overall military spending that appear to have broken the long-standing "parity" agreement requiring equal increases in domestic spending.
Senator Feinstein and Representative Speier voted “aye” for this extremely dangerous bill. Senator Harris did not cast a vote. Neither did Speaker Pelosi, as is regular for the Speaker - but she did nothing to quell the legislation.
ISF is sending a formal letter to all four of our MoC’s criticizing them for making such a grave error in such a dangerous time, and urging them to get serious about limiting the President’s war powers.
Sign on to our Formal Letter to our MoC’s about limiting the President’s war powers. We’re looking for at least 25 signatures from you, our members.
Want to tell them yourself? Join our upcoming meetings with the staff of Senators Feinstein and Harris. See the Upcoming Events section for more details, or check out our #harris_breakout and #feinstein_breakout channels on Slack!
Urgent ask from our Immigration Allies - we need to flood the Public comments to protect asylum seekers. Over the holidays, the Trump Administration published a rule change that will further restrict asylum eligibility for asylum seekers based on contact with the U.S. criminal system. Asylum seekers living in the U.S. are already subject to unjust policing and racial profiling - and even something as innocuous as a traffic ticket puts them at enormous risk of being detained by ICE. Now, the Trump administration is seeking to take away the right to asylum based on contact with the U.S. criminal system. Our allies at Pangea Legal Services have asked us to uplift this call to action - please submit a public comment by January 21st opposing this policy change. More information can be found on our website - please share it far and wide.
