Dear Friend,

This week, Republicans wasted no time prioritizing the issues that matter to the people of Mississippi. We passed legislation to repeal funding for the 87,000 IRS agents approved by Democrats last Congress, established a Select Committee to combat Chinese Communist Party (CCP) influence in the United States, set up a special panel to investigate the weaponization of the federal government, denounced the activities of leftist extremists against pro-life organizations, and passed legislation that would ensure babies who survive failed abortion attempts are given proper medical care.

New Committee Assignment

Today, the Republican Steering Committee recommended that I serve on the House of Representatives Appropriations Committee. Once the Steering Committee recommendations are approved by the Republican Conference, we as new members will officially join the committee as sitting Members. The Appropriations Committee is charged with directing federal spending.

I’m honored to join a distinguished list of Mississippians who have served our great state on the Appropriations Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives. Since the late Congressman Jamie Whitten, a Mississippian has served on Appropriations, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue this important tradition.

I plan to devote sincere attention to the priorities of our great state and to tackle some of the most important issues facing our nation by using the power of the purse. I am committed to advancing the Republican efforts to create a brighter future for our state and nation while promoting fiscal responsibility in the House of Representatives following four years of excessive spending led by our Democratic counterparts.

Repealing the 87,000 IRS Agents

For months, I have promised the people of Mississippi that my first legislative vote in the new Congress would be to repeal the funding for the 87,000 IRS agents that Democrats voted to unleash on hard-working Americans. On Monday night, I fulfilled that promise to the people of Mississippi. I made a statement on my way to the House Floor that you can watch by clicking on the link below. Americans want change, and Republicans are delivering.

The New Rules Package

Over the last four years, a Congress controlled by Democrats has not represented the will of the American people. Republicans took a bold step in making Congress more effective for the American people by passing a new Rules Package that includes major improvements for the way the House of Representatives operates.

The new rules will add safeguards to address the economy. In the new Congress, if a measure is brought before the House to raise taxes, it will now take the support of three-fifths of voting Members to pass the legislation. This new rule will protect hardworking Americans' pocketbooks against government overreach. Furthermore, under the rules package, certain legislation will need to be scored on its potential impact on inflation, which will help prevent more of the inflation-inducing legislation that we've seen over the last two years.

Additionally, the new rules package will require a 72-hour review period for Members of Congress and the public to read through proposed legislation. This puts an end to the last-minute votes on huge bills that Members did not have time to review.

These rules are a strong step toward creating a more effective and efficient democracy. I am happy to support these changes and will continue to encourage even more updates to make the House of Representatives more representative of the people of our great nation.

Defending Life

I spoke on the House Floor in support of a bill to condemn the violence following the leak of the Dobbs v. Jackson case last year. The Biden Administration and House Democrats have been silent on condemning the attacks on pro-life institutions, many of which provide care and services for expectant mothers who wish to carry their children to term. This silence will not stand, and Republicans let it be known that this form of violence must be condemned.
