*Republicans call for tax cuts for working families amidst historic price increases*
"The state over-collected $1.5 billion from taxpayers, then returned $1.15 billion of it in rebate checks. Republicans want to lower taxes to help people struggling to make ends meet."
*Joint Statement by Legislative Republicans*
AUGUSTA ??Legislative Republicans received a state budget briefing from the Governor?s Office today. Republican leaders listened intently and have issued the following Joint Statement:
?State government has over-collected $1.5 billion from taxpayers who are struggling to heat their homes, buy groceries, fill their gas tanks and pay rising prices on everyday items. We need to stop the cycle of over-collecting money from people. Current revenue projections allow us to explore ways of letting people keep more of their hard-earned money to address inflation.
?Republicans are committed to working with Democrats to achieve a two-thirds budget in keeping with legislative tradition and the people?s desire that we all work together. We are pleased the Governor?s proposed budget addresses several priorities Republicans communicated during the recent discussions and public hearing on the energy bill, including fulfilling our commitment to protect those who are most vulnerable. We stand ready to serve Maine?s people during the appropriations process. We also want to explore ways to lower taxes - while we have the opportunity ? so that our people can prosper.?
