John,
If the photo doesn’t already give it away, the NYIC and our fierce coalition and champions are catapulting into 2023 stronger than ever. This week, the NYIC held our annual Member Congress and our members from every corner of the state joined us in Albany to roll out our legislative agenda and strategize on how to hold our elected officials accountable and create meaningful change this legislative session.
While our two day conference with members and allies was re-invigorating, Governor Hochul’s State of the State address made clear the challenges that lie ahead of us this year. Immigrant New Yorkers were largely excluded from her address and her agenda for 2023, despite the real challenges our communities are facing across the state.
To make our voices heard, we rallied at the Capitol and were joined by our elected allies to demand a New York agenda that includes all of us.
We told Albany that this legislative session, we will not rest until:
- Immigrants across New York State are guaranteed a right to counsel during deportation hearings via the passage of the Access to Representation Act, the first act of its kind in the country.
- Law enforcement is barred from corroborating with ICE and Border patrol agents with the passage of New York for All, a crucial law that will protect thousands of families.
- We ensure the safety and protection of immigrant New Yorkers by significantly expanding Language Access across the state so immigrants are able to receive critical resources, information, and assistance in their chosen language.
- Low-income New Yorkers have access to health coverage, regardless of immigration status or age.
