Dear Friend,

Join me in welcoming the 102nd Michigan State Legislature! I am honored to welcome new and returning members to Lansing and excited to hit the ground running. We will continue working across the aisle with both chambers to deliver on the issues that matter most to Michigan Families.

inauguration

I am pleased to have the Michigan House led by Speaker?Joe Tate and the Michigan Senate led by Majority Leader Winnie Brinks. Both are proud Michiganders and proven leaders. Now that we?re in session, let?s get to work!?

Meet Senate Majority Leader: Senator Winnie Brinks

As the first female Senate Majority Leader, Leader Brinks has undoubtedly shown her unwavering leadership to the state of Michigan through her decade of involvement in our state?s politics. She ran as a write-in candidate while juggling her career for a west Michigan nonprofit. She successfully won her election and re-election and has been a persistent leader in our Michigan Legislature ever since.

Brinks

As she continues her career in the senate, Leader Brinks? leadership style will focus on collaboration and consensus across the aisle to make important and necessary changes for the betterment of our Michigan families.

Meet the Speaker of the House: Representative Joe Tate

As Michigan?s First Black House Speaker, Speaker Tate?s climb to leadership has been swift and steadfast. Before joining the legislature, Joe was a collegiate football player at Michigan State University (Go Green! Go White!) where he graduated with a degree in public policy. After graduating, he began his work for the National Football League before leaving to serve two tours in Afghanistan as a Marine. He continued his educational career by earning his Master of Business Administration and a Master of Science in environmental policy and planning from the University of Michigan.?

Tate

In 2018, Joe Tate was elected to the Michigan State Legislature where he was the minority vice chair of the House Appropriations Committee during his second term, allowing him to have a leading role in the historic budget changes in Michigan. As he continues his career in this new role, Speaker Tate plans to prioritize working across the aisle to ensure effective and crucial rights are fought for by our legislature.
