In this moment, California is faced with both economic challenges and climate disasters.

Traditionally, climate action has not been a core funding priority in the state budget. This has been changing the last two years — but we are so far behind that we cannot afford to waver on our commitment to climate action.

Yesterday, Governor Newsom introduced a proposed 2023-24 state budget that will be finalized over the next six months with the Legislature. Even amid budget shortfalls that the state is anticipating, we must commit to continue making even modest investments in climate action. Yesterday’s budget proposal doesn’t do that. Instead it cuts back $6 billion in climate action.

The Governor and Legislature’s landmark climate leadership last year was an essential jumpstart in our fight to solve this crisis, and we’re counting on them to sustain this leadership. That needs to continue this year, and every year.

Right now, will you sign our petition to let our elected officials know we need them to build on climate investments in our state budget each year? Make sure they know that the public demands MORE climate action, not less.

As Californians are pummeled with historic storms and flooding, it's clear that there is still much more to be done.

Lives, homes, and businesses are being lost because communities are not built with green infrastructure that creates resilience to flooding that captures, cleans, and uses stormwater in our fight against the drought.

Instead of radically transitioning from fossil fuels years ago— the source of this climate crisis— we are still in the throes of funding and implementing the transition to clean energy that our future depends on.

We have the solutions; now we just need the political leadership.

Yesterday’s proposal is just the kickoff to a six-month negotiation. We must make it loud and clear that our climate is a priority that must be reflected in the budget.
