Dear Friends of 5 Gyres,
2022 was a big year, leading to several wins in the fight against plastic pollution -- from the start of negotiations toward a Global Plastics Treaty to a ban on expanded polystyrene in California's two biggest cities (an effort that has been underway for more than a decade).
But there's still a lot of work to do. Microplastics are continuing to infiltrate our bodies, with recent studies finding them in our blood, lungs, and breast milk. Meanwhile, the recycling rate is worse than we thought at just 5%, and greenwashing claims from brands make responsible consumer choices more and more difficult.
The good news is that we're up for the challenge. Thanks to you and your support this past giving season, we raised more than $400,000 that will directly support our science, education, and advocacy work to further our mission of eradicating plastic pollution at the source.
You have shown us that you want a sustainable future, starting NOW. So, let’s get to work!
P.S. Didn’t get a chance to donate before the year ended? Show your support for 2023 HERE. Every dollar counts!

SCIENCE
Our 18-month field study on bioplastics is culminating in the release of Better Alternatives 3.0 (Spring 2023). This report analyzes the fragmentation of PHA, PBAT, PLA, and other bioplastics and material blends in natural environments to bring truth in marketing to claims made by producers and companies.

COMMUNITY
Over the next three years, our TrashBlitz program will expand to six new cities/regions with the support of local coalitions and organizations. We will award funding and on-the-ground support to groups that can leverage our TrashBlitz research platform to drive change in their communities. Applications will open in the spring!
