Happy birthday, Mom!

Helen Gym for Mayor

Hi, I’m Taryn! I am the youngest daughter, also known as the spunkiest child.

This was a classic! I tried so hard to give mom bunny ears in this pic but my fingers and arms were too little!

My mom’s childcare strategy was basically bringing me to all of her events. As a kid I fell asleep in front of a podium during a speech by Governor Ed Rendell. I chanted outside Governor Corbett’s office saying “Corbett, Corbett, you can’t hide. We can see your greedy side!” I was 10.

My earliest memories are tagging along at protests. Who else can say they went to their first protest at five?

By age 5, I was protesting a casino in Chinatown. By age 10, I was marching with thousands of people against Corbett’s school budget cuts.

I grew up watching my mom lead our city, supporting neighborhoods all across Philadelphia and standing up to powerful interests who threatened to take away housing, education, and the rights of the people. Today I lead my own campaigns for a better Philadelphia as a student activist.

What I want you to know about my mom is this: She’s still that same fearless and driven person. She’ll keep fighting for the people and our rights. She’s given so much to this city before she came into office, and she’s running for Mayor to make sure Philly is the best place in the world for kids everywhere to grow up safe, healthy, and powerful.

Today’s my mom’s birthday. Nothing would make her day greater than hearing your memories and wishing her a happy birthday!

John: Will you take a moment to share a birthday message with my mom? I know it’ll mean a lot to her to hear directly from you.

Thanks so much!
