GOP Votes to Revoke Additional IRS Funding, White House Threatens to Veto Bill

National Review: On Monday night, the new GOP-dominated House voted to rescind more than $70 billion in funding for the Internal Revenue Service, threatening to kill the Biden administration’s plans to dramatically expand the tax-collection bureaucracy. The measure succeeded with 221 Republicans voting in favor and 210 Democrats opposing. Spearheaded by Representatives Adrian Smith (Neb.) and Michelle Steel (Calif.), the bill targets the massive amounts of money allocated to the IRS in the deceptively named Inflation Reduction Act (National Review). Fox News: The White House said Monday it would veto a bill that passed in the Republican majority House that would claw back $72 billion in funds used to hire tens of thousands of Internal Revenue Service (IRS) staff over the next decade (Fox News).

House Republican Files Impeachment Articles Against DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas
Washington Examiner: A House Republican has filed articles of impeachment against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, following through with a promise several GOP lawmakers made before taking control of the lower chamber earlier this month. Rep. Pat Fallon (R-TX) introduced the articles of impeachment in the House on Monday, accusing Mayorkas of committing high crimes and misdemeanors. The articles have been referred to the House Judiciary Committee for further action (Washington Examiner). Fox News: Fallon’s first article alleges that Mayorkas has failed to faithfully execute the “Secure the Fence Act of 2006.” The article says that law requires the secretary of Homeland Security to “maintain operational control over the entire international land and maritime borders of the United States.” The second article alleges that Mayorkas, “in violation of his constitutional oath, willfully provided perjurious, false, and misleading testimony to Congress” (Fox News).

Speaker McCarthy Confirms He Will Be Removing Several Democrats from Committees
PJ Media: House Speaker Kevin McCarthy repeatedly promised over the past couple of years that, when the GOP took control of the House, he would remove Reps. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), and Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) from their respective committees. McCarthy has followed through on that promise. On Monday, McCarthy confirmed Omar would be removed from the Foreign Affairs Committee and that Schiff and Swalwell would be kicked off the Intelligence Committee (PJ Media). Washington Examiner: Swalwell has been under scrutiny by Republicans after it was reported in 2020 that a suspected Chinese spy had developed relations with the California Democrat in what U.S. officials believe was an extensive political intelligence operation run by China between 2011 and 2015 (Washington Examiner).

Wade. Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La., joined by about 100 GOP co-sponsors, announced the resolution Tuesday morning. The congressman intends to bring the resolution to a vote on the floor Wednesday (Fox News). Rep. Mike Johnson: 100+ @HouseGOP Members have cosponsored my resolution condemning the nationwide wave of violence, vandalism, and intimidation by pro-abortion activists in the wake of the SCOTUS opinion overturning Roe v. Wade. We will pass this long overdue resolution in the House tomorrow (Twitter).

Governor Kathy Hochul Proposes ban on Gas Heaters, Appliances in New York
So will New Yorkers just freeze in the winter? Bloomberg: Governor Kathy Hochul is proposing to make New York the first state in the US to ban natural gas heating and appliances in new buildings, the latest salvo in an ongoing nationwide fight over the fuel. Hochul called during her state-of-the-state address Tuesday to ban the use of fossil fuels by 2025 for newly built smaller structures and 2028 for larger ones. New York would also prohibit the sale of any new fossil-fuel heating systems starting in 2030 (Bloomberg). Washington Examiner: News of the effort comes as the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is also weighing new regulations on natural gas stoves in the United States due to research showing a link between air pollutants and the popular household appliances (Washington Examiner).

Republicans Introduce Legislation to Protect Babies in Botched Abortions
Life News: House Republicans have introduced new legislation that would stop infanticide and protect babies who survive abortion. This is a similar measure to one that pro-abortion former Speaker Nancy Pelosi blocked 80 times when she ran the House. It would also penalize doctors who allow such infants to die or who intentionally kill a newborn following a failed abortion. The Born-Alive Act ensures that infants born alive after an attempted abortion receive the same protection of law and degree of care as any newborn (Life News). Family Research Council: After four years of trying to force a vote on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, Republicans are finally in a position to hold one themselves. The House is scheduled to vote on Wednesday (Twitter).

Pentagon Officially Does Away with Covid Vaccine Mandates
US News: The Pentagon formally dropped its COVID-19 vaccination mandate Tuesday, but a new memo signed by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin also gives commanders some discretion in how or whether to deploy troops who are not vaccinated. Austin’s memo has been widely anticipated ever since new legislation signed into law on Dec. 23 gave him 30 days to rescind the mandate. The Defense Department had already stopped all related personnel actions, such as discharging troops who refused the shot (US News). Lauren Boebert: The Pentagon has RESCINDED their COVID vaccine mandate. This is a HUGE victory. Now, it’s time to make it right for the people whose lives were destroyed by this disgraceful mandate (Twitter)!
