If there’s one thing we saw last week, it’s this: House Republicans cannot be trusted with power.

Trump-apologist Kevin McCarthy had to grovel to the most extreme, most out-of-touch members of his party to barely — barely — win the speakership. On his 15th try.

The far right of the far right — the election-deniers with their heads buried furthest in the sand — made him give away the store. They made him give away the farm. And then they turned him upside down and shook out everything in his pockets.

Make no mistake: Kevin McCarthy has handed the keys to the worst of the right-wing extremists in the House. And they’re driving an agenda that deserves even more notoriety than last week’s mess, even though not as many people are glued to C-SPAN right now:

- Gutting the Office of Congressional Ethics (which I’ve got a bill to strengthen, by the way)
- Making it easier for the rich to cheat on their taxes (which would undo the crackdown I fought to pass last year)
- Slashing Social Security and Medicare (which I’ll keep fighting to protect and expand)

I’m staying in the fight, and I’ll do everything I can to help make sure we flip back the House in 2024.

Republicans only have a narrow four-seat House majority — and 18 of their members will have to run for re-election in districts that President Biden won in 2020.

We can continue to expose the House GOP’s incompetence, corruption, and toxic agenda. We can continue to lay out our popular plans for how we’d make positive changes in the lives of working people, from raising the minimum wage to ensuring universal child care. And we can win back control.

Last year, this team supported eight Democrats who went on to win their elections as new members of the House. I’ll keep fighting to make sure we elect more bold reformers up and down the ballot — and we’ll be in this fight side by side.

P.S. By the way — can I just point out the fact that Nancy Pelosi won all of her speakership elections on the first ballot? Even when we had a narrow majority like the Republicans do today. And then House Democrats got right to work for the American people.
