John, my thoughts today are with the thousands of Californians
experiencing extreme rainfall and flooding, who have endured power outages
to their homes and businesses, as a brutal storm ravages the Golden State.
Tragically, lives have already been lost.

The National Weather Service reports rainfall in California in excess of
600% above average — yet another indicator of the extreme weather
California and the rest of the country have to suffer as a result of
climate change.

Many regions are under evacuation orders, and for the average family,
having to unexpectedly draw on funds for temporary shelter, food, and
other necessities can stretch their bank accounts and credit limits to the
breaking point.

That’s why supporting the work of organizations like the American Red
Cross Gold Country Region and United Way of Greater Los Angeles is so
crucial right now — they help connect flood victims with shelter,
clothing, food, and anything else folks may need.
