John, I want to share something with you.
On December 30th, 2022, Ainzargul Totakhil, an Afghan refugee, was murdered senselessly in Durham, NC.
Ainzargul came to this country to create a better life, working day and night to provide for his wife and children back in Afghanistan. He was a devoted family man and was beloved by his friends, family and community. He had just become an American citizen and I was proud to call him my constituent– and my neighbor– here in Durham.
But instead of enjoying the life he fought tirelessly to create for his family, he was senselessly killed.
This devastating act of violence is something too many refugees and asylum seekers are subject to. We won’t stand for it here in Durham, or anywhere.
We can’t let this act of hate and violence stop us from rallying behind the loved ones of Ainzargul.
