January Monthly Meeting: Tracking Fossil Fuel Finance
Tonight! (Tuesday, 1/10) 7:30 pm via Zoom
Start 2023 off by learning more about a key campaign for addressing the climate crisis, reining in fossil fuel financing. Big banks, asset managers and insurance companies persist in funding fossil fuel development around the world. Join 350BK and 350NYC for an interactive presentation by Liat Olenick of the Sunrise Project about why and how activism targeting these financial players can be effective, meaningful and powerful — especially here in New York City. Register here to attend tonight's monthly meeting on Zoom.
Call On Biden to Declare a Climate Emergency!
1/20/23 4 pm, City Hall Park - Chambers
Start the new year off with a bang! Join us on January 20 when 350 and PvFF groups across the country will be hosting actions to demand that Biden declare a climate emergency and to celebrate the life of Cheyenne River Sioux Climate Leader Joye Braun, who died unexpectedly in November.
350BK’s PvFF Working Group is hosting this action with co-sponsors New York Communities for Change, Food & Water Watch, 350NYC, Extinction Rebellion and more! It will be a lively event with banners, speakers and music. We need YOU to bring a friend to make this a powerful event! Sign Up HERE to help with the Jan 20 ACTION. Want to learn more about PvFF? Check out our web page HERE.
Why demand that Biden declare a Climate Emergency? Invoking a federal emergency would unlock executive powers to:
- Stop offshore oil and gas drilling on federal public lands and waters
- Grow domestic clean technology manufacturing
- End crude oil exports
- (Re)Build renewable and resilient energy systems in communities hardest hit by climate change.
These actions would have a more immediate impact on US climate emissions and expedite the transition to a de-carbonized, sustainable economy. Thirty nine countries have already declared climate emergencies, as have nearly 200 U.S. cities and counties.

Research Savvy? Join the Podcast Team!
Climate Check is growing, and we need to expand our research team! Volunteers will research potential guests and help write up the Interview Guide. The time commitment for this role includes attending an hour meeting once per month and conducting independent research (~1.5 hours/month) about each guest in cadence with our monthly production schedule, with the option to take a break whenever needed. No experience working on podcasts is needed, just savvy research skills and an interest in learning more about New York’s climate leaders! Interested? Email host Eva Dean [email protected].
A victory in Albany: Hochul signs cumulative impacts bill
Gov. Hochul has signed one of the few successful climate-related bills of 2022. The cumulative impacts bill, requires the state to expressly factor in disproportionate or inequitable burdens on minority communities or economically distressed areas under the State Environmental Quality Review Act. 350Brooklyn was one of the many groups that worked to pass this key environmental justice bill.
