John, I’m thrilled to share that this week I’m introducing my very FIRST piece of legislation in Congress, and it’s meant to prevent last week’s GOP circus from happening again. Last week, House Republicans wasted our first week in office with a political dog and pony show, taking five days to elect a Speaker and finally swear us into office. We should have been working on legislation to help those who elected us, but instead, the GOP wasted taxpayer dollars with grandstanding and in-fighting that got so bad it almost turned into a brawl on the House floor. That’s why I’m introducing the McCarthy Act: a bill that will delay the start of House members’ paychecks in a new Congress until after a Speaker is chosen. My bill will prevent a stunt like this from happening in the future by ensuring members who are responsible for stalling work aren’t getting paid for it – it’s just common sense.
