Dear John xxxxxx,

Welcome to the 118th Congress! In all my years in Congress, I have never experienced a week quite like last week. Instead of fighting for the American people, Republicans spent the week fighting against each other. Now that we finally have a Speaker of the House, and I have officially been sworn in for the 118th Congress, I can finally continue my work on behalf of Illinois’ 9th Congressional District. I am looking forward to building on the great success we had last Congress and I vow to continue fighting for the issues that matter most to working families, including, access to health and reproductive care, protecting Social Security and Medicare, a clean and healthy environment, protecting our democracy, and an economy that puts people over profits. Let’s get to work!

On Friday, we recognized two years since the U.S. Capitol, and heart of our democracy, was attacked by a violent mob of election deniers. Witnessing firsthand so many of our fellow citizens willing to violate our democratic processes by committing violence is a memory I will never forget. Having served during 9/11, I remember well another time our nation’s fundamental ideals were under attack but being attacked from within our own government by my fellow Americans shook me to my core. Before the glass was swept up and the true damage assessed, 138 House Republicans, led by Kevin McCarthy, voted against certification of a fair and free democratic election, essentially seeking to finish the job of the rioters to end democracy. Republican leaders created a permission structure for Republicans to violate not only House norms, but also Federal law without any consequence from party leaders. Kevin McCarthy finds himself beholden to the darkest forces on the far right that attacked our democracy. I am inspired every day by Americans who care so deeply about democracy and advancing progressive values. I promise to fight every day and speak truth to power to ensure that this country works for all Americans and upholds our ideals of freedom, democracy, and equality for all.

After dozens of injuries, and even a death, Peloton will now have to pay one of the largest civil penalties in the history of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). I applaud the CPSC for their tireless work to protect consumers, but there are more steps we can take to save Americans from hazardous products. There is a dangerous provision in the Consumer Product Safety Act called Section 6(b), which allows companies to decide on if, when, and how they tell the public about their hazardous products, keeping consumers in the dark. I penned a bill that will repeal Section 6(b), putting consumers first and empowering the CPSC to warn the public about potentially dangerous products. By repealing 6(b) we can restore trust and transparency in product safety, while also preventing injuries and saving lives.

As you may be aware, district boundaries have shifted for the 118th Congress. To check and see if I am still your Representative, please click here. If you are in my district and need any assistance from a federal agency, whether it be a Social Security problem, an immigration case, or a postal issue, just to name a few, my office is here to help. Head to my website for further assistance and information.

Sincerely,

For the first time in 100 years, the Speaker of the House of Representatives was not elected on the first ballot. It took Kevin McCarthy 15 rounds of voting to finally become Speaker. I spoke with CBS 2 Chicago in the midst of the chaos and uncertainty.
