Last week, Ohio became the 8th state to adopt a strict voter photo ID law.

With the stroke of a pen, hundreds of thousands of eligible voters in Ohio have potentially been disenfranchised. These are voters who were eligible to vote in the 2022 midterms but who may lack a current Ohio driver’s license or state ID card, US passport, or US military ID card — which are now the only options for acceptable ID for voting.

That’s where VoteRiders comes in. We need to start organizing in Ohio now to reach the voters who are impacted by this law and help them find or access the documents they need to obtain the photo ID now required to vote. We weren’t expecting to have to devote this many resources to our program in Ohio. We knew we’d be working in Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Texas, Arizona, North Carolina, Wisconsin, and Georgia to help voters get the ID they need to vote in time for 2024. But this new Ohio law throws a wrench in our planning — and our budget.

We know it’s a challenge for some citizens to locate or apply for all the relevant documents they need to secure a state ID, as well as to pay for them. They may have difficulty making appointments at the right government agencies and then physically traveling there during limited business hours.
