Republicans Pass New Rules Package for Congress in First Vote
In what was seen as an early win for the new Speaker. Daily Mail: The House of Representatives passed a rules package Monday night 220-213 with relatively little drama as the first order of business for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s new majority. It includes the motion to vacate provision, which allows just one member to move to remove the House speaker – one of the top conservative demands. It also does away with proxy voting and virtual participation in Congressional committee meetings – which Democrats put in place to deal with the spread of COVID in the Capitol complex. The House Republicans are also creating a select committee on China competition. Republicans were also suspending the so-called ‘Gephardt Rule,’ which automatically raised the debt ceiling when a budget was passed ( Daily Mail). Rep. Andy Biggs: Some wins from the rules package: Restores the Motion to Vacate rule that can remove a failing House Speaker. Restores the Holman Rule that holds members of the deep state accountable by stripping their salary. Ensures that bills coming to the Floor are single-subject ( Twitter).

Republicans Preparing Subcommittee to Look into Keeping Federal Agencies Accountable for Overreach
National Review: The Republican-controlled House is set to vote this week on a resolution to form a Judiciary subcommittee on the “weaponization of the federal government,” including law-enforcement and national-security agencies. Representative Jim Jordan (R., Ohio), the incoming Judiciary Committee chairman, is set to lead the panel. The subcommittee was the subject of negotiations between House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and the GOP holdouts who initially opposed his bid for the speakership ( National Review). Newsmax: Jordan’s subcommittee will also look into the Twitter Files revelations that the FBI was the “bellybutton” point of entry of myriad government agencies influencing the flow of information at Twitter, which in many instances included shadow banning and censorship of conservatives and Biden political rivals ( Newsmax).

Federal Agencies Looking into Banning Gas Stoves
National Review: A federal agency may look to ban gas stoves over concern about the release of pollutants that can cause health and respiratory problems, according to a new report. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is set to open public comment on the dangers of gas stoves sometime this winter. The commission could set standards on emissions from the gas stoves, or even look to ban the manufacture or import of the appliances, commissioner ( National Review). Bloomberg: Natural gas stoves, which are used in about 40% of homes in the US, emit air pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and fine particulate matter at levels the EPA and World Health Organization have said are unsafe and linked to respiratory illness, cardiovascular problems, cancer, and other health conditions, according to reports by groups such as the Institute for Policy Integrity and the American Chemical Society ( Bloomberg).

Overwhelming Majority of Americans Are “Scared” or “Angry” with Direction of Country
Townhall: Since President Biden took office, several polls have shown that Americans are concerned about the direction of the country under his leadership. As a result, Biden’s overall job approval rating has been underwater. Now, as issues like inflation and the border crisis continue to worsen, most Americans say they do not feel optimistic about the direction of the country in 2023. A CBS News-YouGov poll published Monday showed that seventy-one percent of Americans said they feel either “scared” or “angry” about the direction of the country. The smallest amount, 11 percent, said they were “excited” about “things in the United States over the next year” ( Townhall).

Biden’s Border Visit Will Not Fix the Immigration Issue
Christian Post: Critics of the Biden administration’s handling of the immigration crisis at the U.S. southern border say President Joe Biden’s trip to Texas and Mexico amounted to a “photo-op” and expressed concern that the administration’s policies will only exacerbate the humanitarian crisis. President Joe Biden visited the southwest border for the first time Sunday, as concerns grow about the high volume of illegal immigration negatively affecting U.S. citizens and border communities. Biden’s border visit occurred against the backdrop of his administration’s efforts to abolish Title 42, which enables border officials to quickly turn away migrants seeking entry into the U.S. due to public health concerns posed by the coronavirus pandemic ( Christian Post). Washington Post: Biden’s visit to the border got him a small bit of rhetorical breathing room and certainly brought him closer to the problem in a literal sense. It didn’t get him closer to a solution ( Washington Post).

Seattle School District Sues Social Media Giants for Their Role in Worsening Mental Health Among Students
Associated Press: The public school district in Seattle has filed a novel lawsuit against the tech giants behind TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and Snapchat, seeking to hold them accountable for the mental health crisis among youth. Seattle Public Schools filed the lawsuit Friday in U.S. District Court. The 91-page complaint says the social media companies have created a public nuisance by targeting their products to children. It blames them for worsening mental health and behavioral disorders including anxiety, depression, disordered eating and cyberbullying; making it more difficult to educate students; and forcing schools to take steps such as hiring additional mental health professionals, developing lesson plans about the effects of social media, and providing additional training to teachers ( Associated Press). This is the same school district that supports LGBT education in classrooms ( Seattle Schools). While social media no doubt has an impact on the mental health of a child, it is up to parents to regulate their child’s consumption.

DEI Top Priority at Universities at the Cost of Actual Education
HotAir: John Saller describes how Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) took over US universities and how it now dominates hiring, promotion, tenure and pay decisions. The hiring of DEI administrators by universities has been going on for more than a decade but a major change came when California’s UC system made mandatory diversity statements part of the hiring process for all faculty ( HotAir). Free Press: The principles commonly known as “diversity, equity, and inclusion” (DEI) are meant to sound like a promise to provide welcome and opportunity to all on campus. And to the ordinary American, those values sound virtuous and unobjectionable. But many working in academia increasingly understand that they instead imply a set of controversial political and social views. And that in order to advance in their careers, they must demonstrate fealty to vague and ever-expanding DEI demands and to the people who enforce them. Failing to comply, or expressing doubt or concern, means risking career ruin ( Free Press).
