** Monday Nature Mystery

We are pleased to announce the winner of our Monday Nature Mystery, Joanne Hutton. Please email your snail mail address and preference for a hat or tote bag to [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]?subject=Monday%20Nature%20Mystery) .

Congratulations to Joanne for correctly identifying this Green-winged Teal (Anas carolinensis), which could be a female or an immature male. Note the cream colored stripe at the rear. This was a tricky photo though because the bird’s distinctive green marking was obscured in the photo. According to All About Birds ([link removed]) , Green-winged Teals have closely spaced, comblike projections called lamellae around the inner edge of the bill. They use them to filter tiny invertebrates from the water, allowing the birds to capture smaller food items than other dabbling ducks.
