Today and this year Giffords will be celebrating a decade of courage in the fight against gun violence: the courage of survivors who have turned loss into advocacy, the courage of gun owners who reject the gun lobby in favor of a commitment to safety, the courage of politicians who elevated gun safety as a voting issue, and the courage of Gabby Giffords who has turned tragedy into triumph as she has led a movement of millions dedicated to fighting gun violence.
This has been a team effort. With your support, we passed 525 state-level gun safety laws and the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act in Congress; elected hundreds of gun safety champions to national office; organized over 100,000 survivors and Gun Owners for Safety; helped appropriate roughly a billion dollars in funding for violence intervention and gun violence prevention research; and raised $150,000,000 at Giffords, among other successes. 10 Years of Impact: our report on Giffords' decade of work
Good Morning America's report on Giffords' decade of work, featuring Gabby and Mark, interviewed by Robin Roberts
"Why I'm optimistic about reducing gun violence in America," Gabby's 10-year anniversary op-ed inĀ USA Today
While we're proud of the work we've done to build the gun violence prevention movement, change the politics of gun safety, and pass safer gun laws over the past ten years, we know the next decade is even more important. Last year, roughly 50,000 Americans died from gun violence. Moving forward, we have the opportunity to translate our political and policy progress into concrete reductions in gun violence. Your continued and increased support will be vital to such achievements.
2023 will be a year of celebrating our success, but most importantly investing in our future impact. In the weeks to come, we will be announcing dates for 10-year celebrations in cities across the country -- we look forward to seeing you at one of them.
Thank you for being part of such a powerful and historic team. Onward.
Best wishes, Peter
