Rents are soaring across the country. Tenants nationwide, and especially in expensive markets like NY-16, are struggling to cope with price gouging, inflation, and a lack of housing supply. Working families are being pushed to the brink and more and more people face being unhoused — even worse, in the dead of winter.
So Jamaal joined Senator Elizabeth Warren in urging President Biden to take executive action to protect renters and help protect housing as a human right. Together, they urged the Administration to take concrete steps to make housing more affordable and give more working families housing stability.

Jamaal grew up in rent controlled apartments and public housing in New York. Not only is housing a personal issue for him, but he understands that thousands and thousands of constituents in NY-16 are renters, and are hit hard by increased rent prices.
He'll continue to advocate for legislation to combat housing affordability, but in the meantime, the executive branch has power to take action as well. That's why Jamaal led a coalition of Senators and Representatives in writing a letter to the White House asking them to do whatever they can.
