After a chaotic 15 attempts, Kevin McCarthy was finally elected Speaker of the House late Friday night, which means House Republicans are getting to work with their new majority. The results are already concerning.

House Republicans are threatening to hold debt ceiling negotiations hostage — a dangerous precedent that could jeopardize our entire global economy and hit working families the hardest. These politicians are using their new majority to attack Social Security and Medicare, and are willing to let the country default on its loans to make it happen.

And Senate Republicans are sure to follow the same game plan if they take back the majority in 2024. Mitch McConnell only needs to flip two seats next year to win back the majority, and Democrats are facing a very tough map to defend.
