We've got lots of ways to connect this week, including reaching out to members of the 118th Congress!

PFLAG Connects: Communities Meetings

PFLAG Connects: Communities provides a safe, virtual, facilitated space where people with shared experiences can connect each month. Our current communities gather people of Latino, Black/African American, and Asian American and Pacific Islander backgrounds--and people from military families--to gain support, ask questions, and learn from others who have been through similar experiences.

Three Steps to Being a Better Digital Ally

With the recent surge in harassment online—including an increase in harmful language being used against the LGBTQ+ and other marginalized communities—this is a great time to ensure you’re being the best digital ally you can be.

  1. Learn: Our friends at GLAAD released the 2022 Social Media Safety Index (SMSI), which reports on LGBTQ+ user safety across the five major social media platforms: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and TikTok. They have also released an anti-LGBTQ+ hate speech list (trigger warning for language), which includes deeper perspectives on hate speech from the Social Science Research Council’s “Hate-Speech Intensity Scale” and the work of the Dangerous Speech Project.
  2. Watch: Check out our STTA Live episode, “Anti-LGBTQ+ Legislation, Rhetoric, and Violence: Beyond ‘Thoughts and Prayers’”, which features friends from Media Matters and Political Research Associates.
  3. Share: Follow PFLAG National on social media to stay on top of the news and be ready for action. You can find us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. We also recommend following our friends at Media Matters on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

Getting ready for the 118th Congress

Tell your legislators that PFLAG families are ready for this session!

The 118th Congress has begun, with a new Speaker of the House elected on January 6th. There are 75 new House members and 7 new Senators this year- and many of them may not know about PFLAG and the work you do in their home districts!

Call your representatives to introduce yourself, to welcome them, and to urge them to move LGBTQ+ equality forward in 2023. And make sure you check out PFLAG's Advocacy pages, where we update our federal priority bills as Congress begins their session. Let's get to work!

Something to Talk About...Live!

Religious Freedom And LGBTQ+ Rights

A website designer in Colorado claims that creating a website for a same-sex couple’s wedding would violate her first amendment right to free speech. As her case has made it to the Supreme Court it could “undo decades of civil rights protections” and have far reaching impact on marginalized communities throughout the US.

Join us this Thursday, January 12 at 4:30 PM ET / 1:30 PM PT for Something to Talk About Live where we will be discussing “The Supreme Court’s Latest LGBTQ+ Rights Case Is a Chilling Test of 'Religious Freedom,'” by Matthew Rodriguez which appeared on them. We're excited to welcome Tobias Barrington Wolff, Jefferson Barnes Fordham Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania, Carey School of Law.

You can watch on Facebook, YouTubeTwitter, and LinkedIn.
