John, did you follow the failed attempts by Republicans in Congress to elect a Speaker of the House last week?
In case you missed it, despite Republicans controlling a narrow majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, the GOP failed on fourteen successive attempts to elect Kevin McCarthy as their new party leader. The last time Congress went more than three days without a Speaker was in 1859 – before the American Civil War.
So what did McCarthy need to earn the votes to become the 55th Speaker of the House? Give in to each and every demand from extreme MAGA Republicans like Matt Gaetz and Lauren Boebert. Now, the same Republicans who wanted to overturn the 2020 election will be in charge of which bills come to the House floor.
Congresswoman Chellie Pingree called the failure to elect a Speaker a “historic embarrassment.” But beyond embarrassing, there are real and tangible consequences of not electing a Speaker of the House. The votes delayed new members being sworn in, the House was unable to conduct any business (such as filing or voting on bills), and Representatives were unable to receive intelligence briefings. As Pingree put it, “It’s also a very dangerous moment for our country."
We’re continuing to work hard every day, talking to Mainers about the issues they care about, and organizing in communities across the state – to keep MAGA politicians out of Maine. There’s too much at stake to sit idly by.
In solidarity, Jacob
