John,

The House floor is loud, bright, and challenging. This past week I sought
refuge in books, a lifelong practice that helped me survive rough and
tumble siblings and being a single mom. I read Love and Other Words by
Christina Lauren (a 47th district constituent), Expatriates by Janice Y.K.
Lee, and When Life Gives you LuluLemons by Lauren Weisburger. And if you
saw the photo, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson.

I get my books from the library whenever possible, or other freecycle
sources. The Subtle Art came from a little free library in my neighborhood
in the NE section of DC. I always take a peek when I need a new book, and
I’ll be dropping it back off this week.

Here are some lessons I have learned from this book:

 1. There will be struggles and pain along the way as you live. Choose a
goal where you enjoy the struggle. For me, I LOVE campaigning, so
while the House floor was a struggle this past week, I thought back to
all the amazing conversations at doors, rallies with volunteers, and
encouraging notes from supporters.
 2. You are not special. This is an important reminder for elected
officials. Every American has struggles at work, and bad days and
sometimes late late nights. Congress is no different. There are
challenging co-workers, projects that go awry, and bad outcomes at
every workplace.
 3. Don’t hope for a life without problems. Hope for a life full of good
problems. The privilege of serving in Congress has problems—but they
are good problems: the opportunity to improve the lives of Americans
and to protect our democracy.

Thanks to all of the supporters who helped send me back to Congress this
year. I am so grateful for your support.
