The Message of the Wolves

Her words are quite powerful, “We saw 911M trying to defend himself until the last second, to bite back. Like a wounded warrior fighting back with his last breath against a huge overwhelming force.”

As wolf advocates we are often faced with many obstacles including legislators, game commissions and the hunting lobby. We are continually addressing misinformation, myths and embellished tales.

We have been wounded and left with scars. But knowledge is power and like Wolf 911M we must continue to fight.

An Opportunity to Howl!

WISCONSIN PUBLIC ACT 169 mandates a wolf hunting/trapping season, including the use of dogs to hunt wolves in Wisconsin when wolves are not a federal or state listed species.

Wisconsin had an estimated 972 wolves last winter, down from the previous estimate after hunters and trappers killed 218 wolves during a 72-hour season in February 2021.

The draft plan allows for a sustainable population of wolves with no minimum or maximum number of wolves. This is a huge improvement over the 1999 plan.

The Draft Plan is now available for you to SUBMIT YOUR COMMENTS. It is easy! The Wisconsin DNR is essentially asking what you like and dislike about the plan. You do not need to be a Wisconsin resident to comment. A one-page GUIDE has been developed to assist you with your comments.

MICHIGAN AND MINNESOTA WOLF PLANS FINALIZED

The Minnesota Wolf Plan was recently finalized. A key finding of the attitude survey was that 87% of residents support wolves. As a result, an objective of the plan is to “maintain a population comparable to recent estimates (2,200-3,000, well above the federal recovery goals) and distributed across the majority of current wolf range.”

The 10 year Michigan Wolf Plan was also signed in December. Consistent with the 2008 and 2015 plans, the update provides guiding principles for wolf management and utilizes the most current biological and social science complied in the WHITE PAPER Nancy Warren, National Wolfwatcher Coalition Director, summarized the plan in a published article.
