In the face of anemic growth rates since the early aughts, the U.S. seems to have forgotten a fundamental truth: Economic growth is not only possible but desirable. It can lift people out of poverty faster than anything else, as well as reduce the federal debt, promote innovation and restore fairness to a rigged political system. Economic growth has the power to double the average American’s living standard in a generation. Plus, the noneconomic goods we value as a society—good health, clean environment, safety, families and quality of life—also depend on higher growth.
