Yesterday at 1:40 am, it was the honor of a lifetime to (finally) be sworn in as your new U.S. Representative of New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District.

Of course, it didn’t go as any of us had planned — after five long days and voting fifteen times to elect a Speaker of the House, the GOP circus finally ended and we were sworn into office in the early hours on a Saturday. Now, I’m ready to get to work.

My own story has taught me to believe that this is the only place in the world where a son of immigrants from Mexico with barely more than the shirt on their backs could one day be elected to serve in Congress.

As a first-generation American born and raised in the borderlands, I was given the opportunity to make a difference in my community as a staff member for U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich, a conservation advocate, and a Las Cruces City Councilor.

I vow to serve your best interests in Washington and work to ensure every New Mexican has an opportunity to succeed and live dignified, meaningful lives.

The hard work we put into winning this race paid off. Now, I’m going to work for you to lower costs and create new jobs, make prescription drugs affordable, fix our broken immigration system, let women make their own healthcare decisions, and protect our public lands, air, and water for generations to come.

You have put your trust in me and, rest assured, I’m more than ready to fight for you. As this week has proved, it’s going to be challenging to get things done under a Republican majority, but I’m committed to overcoming the far-right chaos and delivering for you, the people.
