John, t his is not a drill: Southern California’s Metropolitan Water District (MWD) has declared a regional drought emergency.

This 23-year-long megadrought is pushing the entire region to its limits. Water conservation efforts from this latest declaration could become mandatory across Southern California if the drought doesn’t turn around — and there are no signs of it stopping .

The neverending drought is creating an unsustainable situation for the MDW’s two water sources: the State Water Project and the Colorado River. Both have been pushed to their limits by over 20 years of drought.

Southern California’s megadrought has had far-reaching consequences. Water supplies have been severely reduced, farmers and ranchers have been devastated, and the conditions for catastrophic wildfires have been fueled. And the rate of negative impacts from a drier, hotter climate is only expected to accelerate as climate change worsens and we reach more environmental tipping points.

SEEC Members championed the drought resiliency provisions of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act that were signed into law. Because of this, billions of dollars will be spent in the region on water conservation and ecosystem restoration projects.

We need more SEEC members in Congress to continue to push for the funding that is necessary to combat the current drought and all of its consequences. Will you pitch in to help us in our fight to pass legislation that protects against these dire consequences of climate change? [[link removed]]
