I have to admit, this isn't exactly how I envisioned kicking off my first term in Congress. It took the Republicans a full five days and 15 attempts before they could get their act together and elect a new Speaker. They’re already proving incapable of leading in 2023, which means it's going to take all my effort and more to cut through the chaos and gridlock to make progress for IL-17. But I’m ready.
A story like mine doesn't usually lead to Capitol Hill. For starters, I'm not a politician; I'm a meteorologist who spent two decades serving my Northwest and Central Illinois communities. I'm also the first LGBTQ person to represent Illinois in Congress.
I'm proud to be breaking new ground, but from the start this race was only about electing a representative who truly has our interests at heart. It was about protecting our democracy and securing reproductive rights, and it was about making sure IL-17 communities can grow and thrive for generations to come.
Now that I'm in Congress, my name may be on the door, but this office belongs to the people I serve, and I fully intend to treat it that way.
I'm not wasting time, friend. We have an incredible opportunity to make progress on issues that affect countless lives: health care, the economy, protecting the environment, and so much more.
I look forward to continuing to engage with my supporters. I'm asking you to hold me accountable and keep pushing me and my colleagues to do more, because we are here to serve you, and your input is critical to our work.
Thanks for your support. Now, let’s get to work.
Eric
