John, while McCarthy transitions into his role as Speaker, some of the more insidious plans he has in store have been buried in the headlines.

In recently released House Rules, McCarthy called for a change in language around the Office of House Ethics. It could potentially change the way the Ethics Committee is run, how violations are reported and referred, and possibly shield those that allegedly had a hand in the January 6th attacks. 

According to Salon's Rae Hodge, "...[T]he OCE's eight-member board is evenly split between Republicans and Democrats, McCarthy's proposal would impose a term-limit cap that would immediately force out three Democrats. The OCE would only have 30 days to fill those seats... "

McCarthy has been no stranger to testing the limits of ethics in Congress as he recently defied a subpoena from the Committee investigating the January 6th incident. 

With the new GOP majority in the House, we can expect a focus on more trivial investigations, while ignoring the real threats that exist to our democracy - all being led now by Kevin McCarthy and his loyalty to the MAGA brand.
